I was hoping to capture the state when a conversation has lengthened far beyond the need for contact, to the point where it is completely meaningless to the listener any more; where politeness binds you to the phone, but your mind and physical form are torpid and devoid of interest and energy.  I find a bleak melancholy in a situation in which a medium that facilitates communication between individuals completely reverses its role and instead fosters a desire for solitude.
